shurah members 2015-2016

Tazeen Farooque
President
tazeenfarooque@gmail.com
My name is Tazeen Farooque and I am a Senior double majoring in Biology and Political Science with a Spanish for the Medical Professions minor. I love reading/watching cliche rom-coms, making list and spending time with friends and family. My favorite things about MSA are that there is always something new to learn and that there is a strong sense of community. MSA has given so much to me over the last three years and I cannot wait to give back.

Hamza Butler
Vice President
habutler@live.unc.edu
My name is Hamza Butler. I am a senior, fluent in geek, was there when Gretchen Weiner didn’t get a candy cane gram, despise horror movies (but have a history of friends guilting me into watching them) and will be acting as your 2015-16 MSA Vice President. I’m a pre-law journalism/poli sci major with a minor in social and economic justice. My concentrations focus primarily on graphic design and critical race theory. As your VP I will strive to maintain a safe and inclusive space for all community members. This semester I intend and hope for the projects and endeavors of MSA to promote and or support liberation, critical reflection, and community engagement. Peace.

Sara Khan
Publicity and Public Relations
sarak786@live.unc.edu
My name is Sara Khan and I am a senior Global Studies BA and Biology BS double major with a minor in Chemistry. I have been an active member of MSA since my freshman year working as an ambassador (now called project leads) under the publicity committee. My personal project was developing the new website in 2012, and I continue to manage it almost four years later. I am also the co-editor of the South Asian students' magazine, UNC MONSOON. My academic interests include women's health, child development, South Asian affairs and history, and the Urdu language. For fun, I mostly read fantasy novels (please send me recommendations!) and waste time on the internet.

Anam Ahmad
Finance Chair
anam01@live.unc.edu
Assalamualaikum. My name is Anam Ahmad and I am the MSA finance chair for the 2015-2016 school year. I am a sophomore majoring in Biostatistics and Chemistry. This past year, I came to appreciate everything this organization stands for: Carolina, faith, and community. I'm looking forward to the upcoming year and continuing to support these goals by becoming actively engaged, spreading awareness, and giving back to the community insha'Allah.

Soumaya Lansari
Outreach Co-Chair
soumaya@live.unc.edu
My name is Soumaya Lansari, a co-chair for Outreach, and I'm very excited to be a member of such an amazing Shurah this year! I'm a sophomore majoring in Global Studies and Sociology and minoring in Social and Economic Justice. I love watching movies and being active, especially with people I know. Playing team sports, especially soccer or basketball, is a favorite activity of mine. I absolutely love our MSA's diversity and interest in learning no matter what the topic is. I'm definitely going to focus on strengthening our halaqas as well as continuing to further the relationship our MSA has with other religious organizations on campus. There is so much I'm looking forward to accomplishing and inshaAllah it will be beneficial to all.

Usman Rahim
Social Chair
usman13@live.unc.edu
My name is Muhammad Usman Rahim, but feel free to just call me Usman. I’m a junior from High Point, NC who will be serving as the Social Chair this year. Basically anything social you can think of I will try to do inshAllah or even if I haven’t planned it please feel free to approach me with ideas of social events you want to partake in this year, because your voice is more important then mine to this organization. A bit about me you should know, I rarely take life or anything seriously because it’s more fun and uplifting to enjoy yourself, as long as you are taking care of your responsibilities. So if you want to ever just goof off, I will just about always be game to goof off. My goals this year are to really work on making the environment of MSA more relaxed and about you, as in I serve for you and not myself. Again, give me ideas that I can work with to properly serve you and keep you involved in MSA. Last thing I leave you with is if you ever have complaints or just want to chat I’d love to be the friend you turn to for that.

Khadija Konsouh
Education Chair
kkdiga@live.unc.edu
Assalamu Allaikum, my name's Khadiga Konsouh and I am a third year studying Quantitative Biology. What I love about MSA is the sense of brotherhood and sisterhood that we all have. MSA's a great organization to be a part of and that's why I serve on shurah with the hopes that all of our members always feel welcome here on campus. In addition to being part of MSA, I also enjoy baking, drawing, and shopping :)

Ahmed Mosabbeh
Outreach Co-Chair
mosabbeh@live.unc.edu
Peace be upon you all! My name is Ahmad Mosabbeh, I am this year's Interfaith Outreach co-chair. A little about me: I love languages - I want to live in a world where the aesthetic power and cultural currency of language is prized by all, where pie-in-sky ideas are commonplace, and where youthful vision is nurtured and promoted. I can sometimes be a bit of a contrarian, but my personality is my own. I do what I think is cool and cogent, often on a whim. As I tell my peers - "It's all a part of my pseudo-plan". I have a proclivity for anything that gives me that old, classy, lived in feeling; the bumpy sensation of a leather book cover, the smell of mint tea, the heft of an old iron skillet, or the tick-tock of a mechanical clock. As a student at UNC, I've spent much time pouring through the annals of Arabic texts in our local libraries, learning and gathering research for my thesis. My primary interests are the linguistic and metrical analysis of Arabic poetry and the historicity of religions, notably Islam and the miraculous language of the Holy Qur'an. When I'm not reading or working on my passion for the Arabic language and culture, you may find me cycling for sport, rollerblading, or exploring the food culture of Chapel Hill and Carborro. My first thesis paper titled The Phenomenon of Linguistic Synonymy in Pre-Islamic Poetry and its Comparison to the Miraculous Qur’an is set for publication in mid 2016. It's like my academic mixtape, it'll be fire I promise.

Saima Akbar
Community Service Chair
saimaafreenakbar@gmail.com
My name is Saima Akbar and I’m a senior Psychology major. In my free time I like to draw and drink tea. I am also a big fan of cats, cartoons, and video games. This year I am the Community Service chair for UNC MSA but for the past two years I was an Outreach Co-Chair. I am a big proponent for Dawah through actions and this year I hope to continue to get MSA involved in the community and make a positive impact. I’m always looking for more ways to get our members involved so please come to me with any questions, comments, or suggestions especially if there are any needs in our community that are not being met. My position in MSA Shurah is to serve you and help you serve our community.
