UNC MSA COMMUNITY SERVICE GOALS

Shurah Member

Saima Akbar (Chair) saimaafreenakbar@gmail.com

The goal of UNC MSA’s community service projects is to spread awareness about the emphasis of service in Islam within our Chapel Hill community and beyond. We believe in alleviating the suffering of our community so that one day Allah (SWT) may remove some of our difficulties on the Day of Judgment (Abu Huraira). As believers, we must live up to our name as Muslims and show kindness to others, as the Prophet (PBUH) has taught us (Abdullah Ibn Masood). Some of the initiatives that UNC MSA takes on are listed below:

Project Downtown: Project Downtown is a service event that is held once a month either at Urban Ministries of Durham or downtown Chapel Hill. Volunteers come and help make and distribute lunches to the homeless and needy.

Hope Dinner: Hope Dinner happens once a semester where different organizations team up with MSA to sponsor a dinner at the United Methodist Church. Volunteers help prepare dinner by cooking, serving and cleaning for the event.

Relay for Life: Relay for Life is a Spring event in which different organizations across UNC come together and help raise money for the American Cancer Society. MSA has a booth the night of the event and fundraises throughout the year.

Al-Maida Food Pantry: AMFP is a pantry located in Masjid Abd-Alrahman in Durham.

MSA members are encouraged to donate any non-perishable items

that will be donated to the pantry.

RCP/Quran Tutoring: RCP Bridge Builders recruits volunteers to help local Burmese refugees get adjusted to their lives here in Chapel Hill or the surrounding area. MSA looks for volunteers to work with the Muslim families who would prefer they have a Mulim volunteer along their side. In addition, we also provide the families with free Quran tutoring where volunteers visit the families every Sunday and help tutor their children in tajweed, reading and memorization of the Quran.

With MSA, there’s always something you can participate in so that our deeds may intercede for us on that Day, InshaAllah.
